  • People ask questions in forums such as Quora and Reddit searching for answers. You need to get there and feed ideas to your content calendar.
  • When you follow peers and influencers on Social networks like Facebook and Twitter, you will get inspiration.
  • Leverage Keyword research tools like SEMrushUbersuggestAhrefsGoogle Keyword planner, etc. to do your topic research. These tools come at free and paid versions both. If you are on a tight budget, it can also be effective to just use the free version.

Place your competitor’s website into these tools and find their ranking for keywords so you can lay hold of some ideas for writing.

2. Research

This is the most crucial step in the blog writing process. Through research, you will understand the nitty-gritty of the topic you want to write about and analyze how to create value surpassing the competition.

After equipping yourself with the necessary data, find out how the competitor offered content and how the audience perceived it. Here are 3 ways you can do it:

Comments section

One indicator to learn how the audience perceived the publisher’s content is the feedback given in the comments.

Go through your competitor’s comments space to find out whether the readers are satisfied or not. Do they have more questions that are unanswered?

It can help you find and fill the gap that your competitor couldn’t.

Word count

Offering value to your readers should be your priority; word count is merely a factor.

Some blog posts can offer value in just 400-600 words, and some need more than 1600 words.

Despite the unending debate, long-form content tends to rank higher over short as it can deliver actionable and insightful information to readers.

Keyword Difficulty

Unless your website is established with good authority, you don’t want to target keywords with high K.D (Keyword difficulty).

Tip: You can use SEMrush to find the K.D of any keyword.

If you just started blogging, focus on keywords with K.D less than 40. This way, you might have more chances to rank for them even with a few backlinks.

3. Writing the blog post

It is vital to learn the ‘searcher’s intent’ for the topic you’re going to write.

Knowing it helps you with what to cover and what not to.

For example, as I write about starting a tech blog, I understand who’s my audience and what exactly they want to get from my blog post. As a beginner, they need to know the following areas:

  • what is blog niche and how to find one
  • what is a domain name and how to get one
  • what is web hosting, and how it relates to blogging
  • how to start and scale content marketing
  • how to monetize their tech blog

  • Check if your content is easy to scan and read.

5. Publish and Promote

The easy one – hitting the publish button. But there’s more to it!

Content Promotion.

It is essential to take the word out by promoting it with the relevant group on social media like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or even Quora. The promotion should not be a one-time-done thing. You need to add value consistently on social media to achieve noticeable results.

Put in place a content promotion strategy. Repurpose your content into infographics, videos, Tweets, or an Instagram post with a link back to your blog post.

Show your content some love regularly by updating it with relevant sources and timely data. In fact, search engines love the freshness of your blogs.
